Grief has a reputation among sword users, but there's an important distinction to make before you spend your runes. The familiar Eth, Tir, Lo, Mal, and Ral recipe belongs to Diablo II, not the standard Diablo 4 runeword system. If you're comparing Diablo 4 Items for a melee build, don't assume that a famous weapon from an earlier game can be crafted in the current one. A seasonal feature could introduce something different, of course, but you'll want to see its actual tooltip and requirements in your game first. That's worth taking a moment to do. Lo and Mal aren't the sort of materials most players want to spend on a guess.
What Grief Means in Each Game
In Diablo II, Grief is a runeword made by placing Eth, Tir, Lo, Mal, and Ral, in that order, into a suitable five-socket sword or axe. It's prized largely for the flat damage it adds, along with other powerful bonuses. It does include poison damage, but describing poison as its main purpose misses what makes the weapon so appealing. Diablo 4 handles runewords differently. Its regular system pairs a Rune of Ritual with a Rune of Invocation rather than asking you to put five runes into a sword. The Ritual sets a condition, and the Invocation produces an effect when enough Offering has been accumulated. Those are two separate games with separate rules, even when some rune names look familiar.
Before You Spend Your Runes
Start with the character and mode you're actually playing. Look at the rune descriptions in your inventory, then inspect the item where you plan to socket them. Don't rely on a recipe simply because it appears beside a Diablo 4 item name in a guide. If a current seasonal feature mentions Grief, read the in-game wording carefully: it should tell you what the effect does and what the item needs. You should also make sure your character can equip the base and that the slot makes sense for your build. If you can't find the recipe or see the promised effect, hold on to your materials. There's no reason to turn a rare rune into an experiment you didn't mean to run.
Picking a Weapon for Your Build
A useful melee weapon isn't always the one with the biggest number at first glance. Think about the skill you use most, how often you can attack, and whether that skill actually uses the weapon you're considering. Barbarians, for instance, can carry several weapons, so the one shown on your character isn't necessarily the one used for every attack. Rogues face a similar practical question when switching between ranged and close combat. Druids and Necromancers have their own equipment restrictions and skill interactions. Try the weapon against a sturdy target, then compare it with your current setup. If the new item makes your rotation awkward or costs you too much survivability, a small tooltip increase may not feel like an upgrade at all.
Making Damage Effects Count
Fast attacks can be valuable when an item's wording rewards repeated hits, but not every effect works that way. Some trigger only under a stated condition, while others have a cooldown or scale with a particular type of damage. Poison deserves the same care: a damage-over-time bonus won't automatically improve every part of a weapon's output. Read what the effect actually says, then test it with the skill you intend to use. Pay attention to resource use, too. A setup that lets you keep attacking often feels better than one that produces a large hit and then leaves you waiting. Keep enough defence for the content you're running. Damage doesn't help much when you have to retreat after every pull.
Final Thoughts
Grief is a memorable Diablo II weapon, but its five-rune recipe shouldn't be treated as a standard Diablo 4 crafting recipe. For Diablo 4, work from the runes, sockets, and seasonal instructions visible on your own character. If you're weighing diablo 4 mats for sale against the materials you've already saved, make sure you know exactly which items your intended setup requires before making a decision. Then test the finished setup in the content you play most. A weapon that supports your skills and keeps your rotation comfortable is worth more than a familiar name on its own.
