The costliest mistake with Jiquani's Soul Core of Automation is treating it like a universal weapon upgrade before checking how much of the build's damage actually comes from Totems. In the 0.5.5 Forbidden Rites environment, the item requires level 50, is limited to one, and grants +1 to all Totem Skill Gems when socketed into a weapon. That bonus can justify spending Path of Exile 2 Currency on a carefully planned weapon, but it cannot rescue a weak base, poor defenses, or a rotation that barely uses Totems.

Measure the Real Value Before Replacing Your Weapon

Automation adds a second layer of value to the weapon slot, but the first layer still matters more. A weapon with substantially weaker spell, attack, elemental, or defensive modifiers can reduce clear speed immediately, even if the Totem gem gains one level. Compare weapons inside the same damage bracket rather than comparing a finished rare item with an early leveling base.

The practical threshold is simple: if Totems provide less than roughly one quarter of your sustained damage, the socket may be difficult to justify during map**. A build using Totems for half or more of its boss damage can treat the Soul Core as a meaningful offensive modifier, especially when the replacement weapon loses only a small amount of direct power.

Do not spend premium crafting materials at level 50 merely to create a temporary carrier. Wait until the weapon has a strong base, useful affixes, and enough defensive value to survive the next endgame tier. Otherwise, the currency invested in the socketed item becomes a sunk cost when your build reaches a better weapon class.

Turn Totems Into a Repeatable Combat Step

Automation performs best when Totems are part of the normal sequence rather than an emergency button. In a typical encounter, place the Totem before the main attack, move into a safe angle, and keep dealing damage while it remains active. The extra level then affects several attack cycles instead of a skill used once every thirty seconds.

Positioning matters more than the tooltip suggests. A Totem placed behind a boss can lose uptime during a phase transition, while one placed near the boss's movement path may continue attacking after you reposition. In dense maps, place it just before an elite pack rather than after the fight has already started, because delayed deployment reduces the value of its improved skill level.

Resource management also changes. Reserve enough mana and spirit for the opening Totem plus your movement skill, particularly in areas where repeated pack engagements prevent natural recovery. A powerful Totem that cannot be deployed during the second elite encounter is less valuable than a slightly weaker setup with reliable uptime.

Use Different Weapon Priorities for Maps and Bosses

Map** rewards smooth activation, mobility, and consistent area coverage. A weapon with balanced offensive stats may outperform a narrowly optimized bossing option when it lets you clear three packs without returning to town or waiting for recovery. Automation helps most when the Totem contributes damage immediately after placement.

Bossing creates a different calculation. During long stationary windows, the Totem can attack repeatedly while you avoid telegraphed abilities, so the +1 gem level gains value over the full encounter. Test the setup against bosses with at least two phase changes, because early burst can hide poor sustained damage and unsafe placement.

Keep a separate weapon plan if your build switches between clear and single-target skills. The Soul Core is not a reason to ignore resistance gaps, recovery, or movement requirements. Losing a defensive breakpoint to gain a small Totem increase can turn a profitable expedition into a failed run with no meaningful damage improvement.

Common Mistakes and Efficient Upgrade Timing

Compare total encounter damage instead of relying on the weapon tooltip.
Delay expensive crafting until the level 50 base supports your endgame plan.
Test Totem uptime during movement-heavy boss phases before committing resources.
Keep enough mana and spirit for repeated deployments across elite packs.

The best candidates are characters whose Totems remain active through most combat and already use a competitive weapon. Pure utility Totems, short-duration setups, and builds with severe mana pressure should usually solve those weaknesses first. Automation becomes attractive after the core defenses, resistance targets, and primary damage links are stable.

For farming, evaluate the upgrade over a complete map circuit rather than one favorable pack. Track deployment frequency, deaths, town trips, and boss completion time across ten comparable maps. If the Soul Core improves clear consistency without forcing a weaker weapon or extra recovery stops, it has earned its slot; if not, save the budget for a stronger base or buy POE 2 Mirror of Kalandra after your core equipment is ready.
